Carol Liu

Carol Liu, a former La Canada Flintridge City Councilmember and two-time Mayor, is an Assemblymember representing the 44th District. Her number one priority as a Member of the Assembly is to restore California's public education system to be among the very best in the nation. Assemblymember Liu has been named chair designee for the Assembly Committee on Higher Education. She sits on the powerful Assembly Rules Committee as well as the Assembly Committees on Education; Transportation; Human Services; and Governmental Organization. She is Vice Chair of the Select Committee on Community Colleges/School to Career. She also serves on the Select Committees on Low Performing Schools; Air and Water Quality; Entertainment and the Arts; Domestic Violence; Privacy; and Workforce Development.

A fifth generation Californian and the child of an immigrant, Liu was born in Berkeley and raised in Oakland. She was educated in public schools and the California UC system. She earned a lifetime teaching credential from the University of California, Berkeley School of Education in 1964 and returned for her administrative credential in 1978. Liu was a public school teacher from 1964 through 1978 and a school administrator until 1984. After moving to Southern California in 1984, Liu became an active volunteer and civic leader, focusing on education and other issues affecting children and community quality of life.

Carol is married to Mike Peevey, a businessman and entrepreneur. They have three grown children and three grandchildren.
