Mary Tobias Weaver
Mary Tobias Weaver, Assistant Superintendent for the Education
Support Systems Division in the California Department of Education
(CDE), has statewide programmatic responsibility for K-12 adult
programs, including specialized programs in the Offices of Adult
Education, Counseling and Student Support, Educational Options, and
Safe Schools and Violence Prevention. Specific programmatic
responsibilities include adult programs funded by the Adult Education
and Family Literacy Act that relate to adult basic education,
English-as-a-Second Language, and English Literacy and Civics
Education.
Ms. Weaver has worked for CDE for the past 22 years in a variety
of capacities. Approximately three years ago Ms. Weaver assumed the
responsibilities for the Adult Education Program as the Assistant
Superintendent of the Education Support Systems Division. Two years
ago she took on the challenging role of State Director of Adult
Education.
Ms. Weaver is a strong advocate for mentoring roles in which
adults work closely with youth and their families to bridge educational
barriers. She also is a strong advocate for alternative options for
students to meet the standards established for a sound education.
Ms. Weaver obtained her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University
of California, Santa Barbara, with a home economics major and
political science minor. Her Masters of Science degree is in Consumer
Science, an experimental graduate degree that included program
emphasis in economics, agricultural economics, consumer studies,
and law. She has life credentials in secondary teaching and K-12
administration. She taught courses in junior high school home
economics and UC Davis teacher education. She was a career guidance
project director in a high school guidance grant program prior to
joining CDE.
