First, I consider government in a democracy to be an _expression_ of community rather than an inherent violation of individual freedom.

A personal experience is the recent senatorial election in my state. After a narrow defeat, the challenger said that one of the reasons the party did not back him strongly was that they did not think he had a chance even though the incumbent's views are an anathema to the challenger's party. Another case of money trumping ideas.
