As Stephen Young states in his comments, I too received a well-rounded education thirty years ago and was somehow able to complete the college prep requirements as well as take four years of business education courses and work experience. I matriculated directly into a UC full-time and also worked my way through college as a secretary. Why can't my 15 year old be given the same options today? Instead she is being asked in 9th grade to make a decision about either choosing the UC A-G curriculum or "opt out" and only go to a community college if she wants to take any career electives. Why can't we have a high school curriculum that does both?? The UC A-G requirements are driving the high school curriculum for a small number of students and, in the process, are leaving out many others. What a shame.
