Fred Jones makes an excellent point. While the Student Learning Working Group did advocate for a default A-G curriculum, you will find that the draft Master Plan stops short of that by calling for a rigorous and challenging curriculum. The choice of this wording was deliberate to allow for the entire curriculum to be strengthened, including what we have traditionally called vocational and career/technical courses. This approach should permit students to choose the courses they are interested in (traditional college prep or traditional career/tech) and still be assured that academic content will be taught and students will be taught how to apply that content in real world contexts. Rigorous curriculum then would entail 3 dimensions: academic content, application, and context. With this integrated concept, the Master Plan hopes to expand the number and types of courses judged to provide appropriate preparation for college success as well as employment. How can this intent be better communicated in the next version of the Master Plan?
