i am against a Manditory Kindergarten for 5 year olds, first of all most 5 year olds can't or shouldn't have to sit still long enough for the setting in which a school program is calling out. Being away from the parents all day is not healthy for most kids, the system should not replace good parenting based on the lowest denominator. Poor kids need a boost up but not at the expense of all other kids. Also, their are developmental issues ie., simple physical ones, most kids eyes don't develop completely till they reach 7 years old. We should have an alterate option for children who need to come up to speed, not replace the parents role in rearing their children. Most teachers seem to assign 'home work' which keeps the kids occupied and not learning family values what ever they might be. Not all kids are ready for the rigors of an all day program, kids at this age need encouragement, love and parent envolvement, it should be optional. Kids that need special assistance to get up to speed should have optional classes to assist them.
